In one sentence

An AI answer is the written response an AI assistant like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity gives to a shopper's question, and the brands it names are often the only ones that shopper considers.

What an AI answer looks like for a shopper question

A shopper asks "best espresso machine under $500 for a beginner." The assistant doesn't return ten links. It writes one reply: a few named machines, a reason for each, and sometimes links to the pages it drew on.

That reply is the whole shelf. Brands in it get considered. Brands outside it don't exist for that shopper.

Why AI answers matter for ecommerce brands

The answer does the comparison for the shopper. If it names three competitors and not you, the shopper may buy without ever reaching your store, even if your product fits them better.

You also can't see your absence. No ranking report tells you an assistant left you out. You have to ask the questions and read the answers.

How to get your brand into AI answers

  1. List the shopper questions shoppers ask in your category.
  2. Ask each assistant those questions and note who gets named.
  3. Read the pages the answers cite, then publish pages that answer the same questions more clearly.
  4. Check again. Answers move, so track them over time.

AI answer FAQs

Does ChatGPT give the same answer every time?

No. The same question can return different brands on different runs, days or accounts. One check is a snapshot. Track the same questions over time to see the pattern.

Where do AI answers get their information?

From two places: what the model learned in training data, and pages it looks up live through grounded search. Live lookups are the part you can influence fastest.

How do I see what AI answers say about my store?

Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your shoppers ask, and write down who gets named. Or run a free check and see it across all four at once.
