In one sentence

An AI citation is a source an AI answer links to or credits, like a review roundup or product page, and getting cited is how your pages shape what AI tells shoppers.

When an assistant looks up pages live to answer a question, it often shows where the answer came from: numbered footnotes in Perplexity, source links in ChatGPT search, link cards in Google AI Overviews. Each of those is a citation.

Answers written purely from training data usually cite nothing. Citations show up when the assistant searched the web first.

AI citation vs. brand mention: what's the difference

AI citation
Brand mention
What it is
A page the answer links to or credits
Your brand's name in the answer text
Who owns it
Whoever published the page
You, wherever it came from
What it gives you
A clickable path to a page
A place on the shopper's shortlist

You can get one without the other. A review site can be cited while the answer names you. Your blog can be cited while the answer names a competitor. See brand mention.

Why AI citations matter for ecommerce brands

Citations show you what the assistant trusts in your category. If the same three review sites keep getting cited, those are the pages deciding who gets named.

A citation to your own site also gives the shopper a direct link to your store, which is rare in an AI answer.

How to get your store cited by AI

  1. Collect the citations for the shopper questions you care about.
  2. Sort them: your pages, competitor pages, review sites, forums, marketplaces.
  3. Publish pages that answer the question directly, with specifics a roundup can't give: sizing, materials, compatibility, real comparisons.
  4. Earn a place on the third-party pages that already get cited: reviews, roundups, earned media.

AI citation FAQs

Do AI citations send traffic to my store?

Some. The answer often gives shoppers what they need without a click, so treat citations as a bonus, not a traffic plan. Track the clicks you do get as AI referral traffic.

Why does AI cite Reddit instead of my site?

Forums answer real questions in plain words, with opinions from people who bought the product. That is exactly what assistants look for. Answer the same questions on your own pages, just as plainly.

Can my brand be named without being cited?

Yes. The assistant may name you from training data, or from a review site it cites. Being named is what puts you on the shortlist. Being cited is what sends the click.
