In one sentence
AI Overviews are Google's AI-written summaries at the top of search results that answer a query directly and link to sources, so shoppers can get a recommendation before they see a single store link.
How Google AI Overviews choose sources
AI Overviews are built from pages in Google's own search index. Google's AI reads several of them, writes a summary, and shows link cards for the pages it used.
That means the basics still apply. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can be a source. Beyond that, Google favors pages that answer the question clearly and specifically.
AI Overviews vs. featured snippets
See featured snippet.
How AI Overviews affect ecommerce traffic
The summary sits above the regular results. If it answers the question and names a few products, many shoppers stop there. That's a zero-click search, and it can happen even when your page ranks well below.
Visits that do come from an AI Overview link are counted as regular Google organic traffic, so you won't see them separately in your analytics.
How to show up in Google AI Overviews
- Search your shopper questions on Google and note which have an AI Overview, who gets named, and which pages get linked.
- Make sure your pages are indexed and not blocked from snippets.
- Answer the exact question near the top of the page, in plain words, with specifics.
- Keep product facts consistent and machine-readable with product schema.
AI Overviews FAQs
Can I keep my store out of AI Overviews?
Yes, with the nosnippet or max-snippet controls, but those also limit your regular snippets. Blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt does not remove you from AI Overviews.
Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews appear on the normal results page. AI Mode is a separate, chat-style tab in Google Search where shoppers can ask follow-up questions. Both draw on Google's index.
Does ranking on Google help me show up in AI Overviews?
It helps, because AI Overviews draw from pages Google has indexed. But the pages linked aren't always the top-ranked ones. A clear, direct answer can be linked from further down.
