In one sentence

AI referral traffic is the visits that reach your store from links in AI answers, like those from ChatGPT or Perplexity, and it shows which assistants are sending shoppers your way.

Where AI referral traffic comes from

When a shopper clicks a link or citation in an AI answer, your analytics records the assistant as the referrer. The common ones:

  • chatgpt.com (ChatGPT often also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the link)
  • claude.ai
  • gemini.google.com
  • perplexity.ai
  • copilot.microsoft.com

How to track AI referral traffic in Google Analytics

  1. In Google Analytics 4, open the Traffic acquisition report and set the dimension to Session source.
  2. Filter for the domains above, or build a custom channel group called "AI assistants" with a regex that matches them.
  3. Add orders or revenue as a metric so you see what the visits are worth, not just how many there are.

On Shopify, the sessions and sales by referrer reports show the same domains. For a full walkthrough, see How to track AI traffic in Google Analytics and Shopify.

Why AI referral traffic undercounts AI's influence

Referral traffic only counts the clicks. Much of what AI does for your brand never shows up as a click:

  • A shopper reads your name in an answer, then types your URL. That lands as direct traffic.
  • Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted as Google organic.
  • Some app and in-chat visits arrive with no referrer at all.

Treat AI referral traffic as a floor, not the total. To see the full picture, track whether you're named, not only whether you're clicked.

AI referral traffic FAQs

Why does ChatGPT traffic show up as direct in my analytics?

Some visits from the ChatGPT apps arrive without a referrer, and shoppers who copy your name or URL from an answer look like direct visits. The utm_source=chatgpt.com tag catches some of what the referrer misses.

Does traffic from Google AI Overviews count as AI referral traffic?

Not in your reports. Google counts those clicks as regular organic search, so you can't separate them from normal Google traffic in GA4.

My AI referral traffic is small. Does it matter?

Look at what it buys, not just its size. Shoppers who click through from an AI answer have already been given a reason to choose you. Compare its order rate to your other channels before you judge it.
