In one sentence
Answer engine optimization is the work of making your content the clearest, most trusted answer, so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name your brand when shoppers ask them what to buy.
How AI assistants decide which brands to recommend
When a shopper asks an AI assistant a question, it reads pages from across the web, then writes one answer and names a short list of brands. There's no page two.
AEO means publishing the pages those assistants read: product pages that answer real questions, category pages that compare options, and FAQs written the way shoppers actually ask.
AEO vs. SEO: what changes for ecommerce
Why AEO matters for ecommerce brands
Shoppers now ask full questions, like "best trail running shoes for wide feet." If the answer names other brands, the shopper may never visit your store at all, even if your product fits better.
How to get your products recommended by AI
- Find the shopper questions shoppers ask in your category.
- Check which brands each AI engine names for them.
- Publish pages that answer those questions directly, then check again.
AEO FAQs
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Close enough. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the other name for the same work: getting AI tools to include and cite your content. Pick one term and stick with it.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Many AI assistants run a live web search before they answer, so the pages that rank are often the pages they read. SEO gets you found. AEO gets you named. Do both.
How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my brand?
Ask it the shopper questions your shoppers ask, then ask Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews the same ones. Answers change from run to run, so one check is a snapshot, not a verdict. Track the same questions over time.
Does AEO work for Shopify stores?
Yes. It works for any store with pages AI can read. On Shopify, start with clear product pages, collection pages that compare options, product schema, and a robots.txt that lets AI crawlers in.
How long does AEO take to work?
It depends on the engine. Assistants that search the web live can find a new page once it is crawled. Answers that come from training data only change when the model is updated. Publish, then check again every few weeks.
