In one sentence

A product feed is a structured file of your catalog, with titles, prices, stock, variants and images, that shopping channels and AI assistants read to show and recommend your products accurately.

What goes into a product feed

A feed has one row per product or product variant. Each row carries the facts a channel needs to list it: ID, title, description, link, image, price, availability, brand, GTIN, condition and shipping.

Every channel has its own rules for which fields are required. The more fields you fill, the more places your products can show up.

Product feed vs. product schema: what's the difference

Product feed
Product schema
Where it lives
A file your platform syncs or you upload
Code on each product page
Who reads it
Shopping channels, marketplaces and AI shopping channels
Search engines and AI crawlers visiting the page
How it updates
On a schedule, or in real time through your platform
Whenever the page changes
Best for
Keeping price and stock in sync across channels
Stating the facts on the page itself

You need both, and they should say the same thing. See product schema.

Why product feeds matter for AI shopping

Some AI shopping channels read product data from feeds instead of, or alongside, your pages. When an assistant can check price and stock from a feed, it can recommend your product with confidence, and in agentic commerce it can sell it too.

When the feed is stale, the assistant shows the wrong price or skips you for a store with cleaner data.

How to optimize your product feed for AI shopping

  1. Write titles the way shoppers search: brand, product type, then the attribute that matters (size, color, material).
  2. Fill every field you can, especially GTIN, brand and variant attributes.
  3. Keep price and availability in sync with your store.
  4. Make the feed match your product pages and schema.
  5. Fix the errors each channel reports, at the source product.

Product feed FAQs

Does Shopify create a product feed automatically?

Shopify syncs your catalog to the sales channels you connect, like Google & YouTube and its AI channels. It sends what's in your products, so the titles, descriptions and attributes you write are the quality of your feed.

How often should my product feed update?

At least as often as your price and stock change. If you run sales or sell out fast, use a channel your platform syncs automatically, not a file you upload by hand.

What's the difference between a product feed and a product catalog?

Your catalog is everything in your store. A feed is an export of it, formatted for one channel's rules. One catalog can power many feeds.

Why was my product rejected from a feed?

Usually the data is missing or doesn't match: no GTIN, a feed price that differs from the page, or a missing image. Each channel tells you the reason. Fix it on the product itself so it doesn't come back.
