In one sentence

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent researches, compares and sometimes buys products for a shopper, so the agent, not the shopper, decides which stores make the shortlist.

How agentic commerce works, from question to checkout

A shopper gives an AI assistant a goal: "find a waterproof hiking boot under $150 that ships by Friday." The agent does the legwork. It searches, reads product pages, reviews and product data, checks each option against the goal, and comes back with a short list.

Some assistants stop there and send the shopper to your store. Others go one step further and complete the purchase, either inside the chat or by opening your checkout with the cart already filled.

  1. Discover: the agent finds stores and products that could fit.
  2. Decide: it compares price, specs, stock, shipping and reviews.
  3. Buy: it hands off to checkout, or completes the order itself.

Agentic commerce vs. AI shopping assistants: what's the difference

Agentic commerce
What the AI does
Answers questions and recommends
Acts on the shopper's behalf
Who clicks buy
The shopper
The shopper or the agent
Where the sale happens
On your store
On your store or inside the AI tool
What it needs from you
Pages that answer shopper questions
That, plus accurate price, stock and checkout data

An AI shopping assistant is where agentic commerce starts. The difference is who takes the last step.

Why agentic commerce matters for ecommerce brands

The agent is your new first visitor. It doesn't see your hero banner or your brand video. It reads your product data, your pages and what other sites say about you.

If a detail is missing or out of date, the agent picks a store that has it. And an agent can only buy from stores it has already found, so getting named comes first.

How to get your store ready for AI shopping agents

  1. Keep product data complete and current: price, stock, variants, shipping and returns.
  2. Publish a clean product feed and product schema so agents read facts, not guesses.
  3. Answer real shopper questions on product and collection pages.
  4. Let AI crawlers in with your robots.txt.
  5. Check which brands each AI engine names for your shopper questions, then check again.

Agentic commerce FAQs

Can ChatGPT buy products from my Shopify store?

It can for eligible stores. Shopify connects stores to AI channels like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode through its agentic storefronts. How the sale finishes depends on the channel, so check the agentic settings in your Shopify admin to see what is on for your store.

Is agentic commerce the same as AEO?

No. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is getting named in the answer. Agentic commerce is what happens next, when the agent acts on that answer. AEO comes first, because an agent won't buy from a store it never found.

Do I need a separate integration for every AI assistant?

Less and less. Open standards like the Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed by Google and Shopify, let a store describe its checkout once for many agents. Your commerce platform handles much of the connection for you.

What do AI shopping agents look at when choosing a product?

Whatever they can read: product pages, structured data, reviews and mentions on other sites. Clear specs, current prices and stock, and a plain return policy make your product easy to pick. Missing details make it easy to skip.
